SALA Open Studio – ‘A Woman’s Work Is Never (Un)Done

SALA Open Studio – ‘A Woman’s Work Is Never (Un)Done

When is an artist bringing imagination into being, not an artist? When she’s a knitter.
Woman’s work, handiwork, craft – knitting is derided and disparaged as an artform. Yet, the same impetus to create, to manipulate colour, texture, to tell a story and please the eye, motivates a knitter to knit, as a painter to paint.
Knitting shares many characteristics with Buddhist and Indigenous practices. Repetition, pattern, story, tradition, and connection inform both practices and elicit healing, purification, and transformation. Knitted garments are impermanent artefacts; knitted, unravelled, and transformed once more into new forms. While knitting the artist too is transformed by engaging with the process. In this living exhibition, Pru Raymond will make the often-private practice of knitting, public. Over the course of a week’s residency in the shop window of Yarn Trader, Port Adelaide she will knit, unravel, and reknit original, unrepeatable designs: impermanent artefacts of textile art that emerge from her drive to create, to continue her family story and transform herself through art.
The exhibition will be live streamed on Twitch. https://www.twitch.tv/dear_pru
You can come and join Pru with your project, or interact with her virtually via her twitch!
