Is wool safe for babies?

Few things are more exciting than welcoming a new baby into the world, but parents quickly learn that there are a multitude of things to worry about once you have a little one to raise. Choosing the right clothing is important, and many parents are concerned about which fibers are better than others when it comes to clothing construction.

Is wool safe for babies?

If you’ve ever worn a wool sweater only to find yourself squirming and scratching all day long, you may be worried about dressing your baby in a garment made from wool. It’s important to understand that not all wool fibers are the same, and that some wool items are perfectly safe for babies.

In fact, unless your little one has a true allergy to wool, even a scratchy sweater won’t cause any true harm. But dressing an infant in clothing that is not soft and comfortable is a recipe for a very upset little one. Taking some time to think about the fabric and fibers used to manufacture your infant’s wardrobe can prevent some very unpleasant wardrobe problems.

Merino wool is an outstanding choice for baby clothing. The fibers in this kind of wool have a silky, smooth, outer layer that creates a soft feel against the skin. Even babies with eczema and other skin conditions can wear clothing made from merino wool without developing a rash or feeling itchy.

Will wool clothing make my baby too hot or clammy?

Dressing an infant in clothing that is too tight, or warm, or made from fabrics and fibers that can’t breathe well can lead to a fussy and unhappy baby. One of the best things about merino wool is the fact that these garments have the ability to thermo-regulate, meaning they trap warm air next to your infant’s skin while also absorbing moisture from sweat.

Simply put: merino wool baby clothing will help your baby stay warm and dry when the temperature drops, and allow them to stay cool and dry when the temperature rises.

Are wool and babies a good fit during sleep?

Studies show that babies who are put to sleep in a wool nightgown, swaddle wrap, or baby sleeping bag rest more comfortably and for longer than those put down in clothing and blankets made from other materials. They settled down quickly, fell asleep faster and remained asleep longer than little ones dressed or wrapped in other types of fabric.

When the weather is cooler, consider dressing your little one in a layer of merino wool clothing and then placing them in a merino wool baby sleeping bag at night, or layer a merino wool blanket over a set of merino wool pajamas. During warmer nights, one layer of merino wool is usually enough to help them rest comfortably.

Is wool safe for babies in handmade clothing?

When it comes to wool and babies, it doesn’t matter if the garments or blankets are produced commercially or hand-knitted by a loving family member. The process used to gather, manufacture, and process merino wool is the same regardless of whether the yarn is sold to a garment manufacturer or a craft store.

Merino wool is also naturally odor-resistant and antimicrobial. The fibers have a thin layer of lanolin that repels the bacteria responsible for odors. Your baby can wear merino wool clothing longer than cotton or other options before the garments need to be washed, which helps these items of clothing last longer.

What should I do if my baby simply cannot tolerate wool clothing?

Now that you feel confident that wool and babies are a good match, you may be excited to purchase an adorable soft sweater or buy merino wool yarn to knit a custom piece for your newest family member. Remember, however, that just because wool is a safe fiber choice for infants, that doesn’t mean your baby will love the way merino wool feels.

If you find your infant is especially squirmy or irritable when dressed in a merino wool piece of clothing, consider using that garment as a decorative item in the nursery. Placing a hand-made merino wool piece in a shadow box and displaying it on the wall is the perfect way to show your appreciation for a one-of-a-kind gift
