Aleks Byrd Weekend – Introduction to Estonian Knitting Workshop
Get a taste of Estonian knitting by making a wristlet showcasing four traditional techniques. This workshop is an introduction to Estonian knitting exploring knit fringe, knit braids, bobbles, and roosimine inlay knitting. We will travel across Estonia learning these different techniques that are much easier than they look. A great way to get to grips with many of the techniques covered in Aleks Byrd’s book Traditions Revisited: Modern Estonian Knits.
Students will learn:
- Estonian Pärnumaa knit fringe
- Knit braids: Kihnu vits & Twisted braid • Nupp bobble
- Vikkel lateral braid
- Roosimine inlay knitting
SKILL LEVEL: intermediate knitter ; students should be comfortable to knit and purl in the round with two colours at a time (easy colourwork), reading from charts, cast-on, bind -off
LENGTH : 6 hours in person taught in two 3 hour sessions
MATERIALS NEEDED:
- 4mm / US 6 needles for knitting small circumference (Double pointed needles or circular needles for magic loop)
- Stitch markers
- Scissors
- Knit Fringe tool (available from Aleks Byrd) or flat stick or card approx 0.5” / 1.5 cm wide for wrapping fringe yarn loops
- DK yarn in 3 contrasting colours in the following approx. amounts:
– MC (main colour) 20g
– CC1 (contrast colour 1 used for fringe) 10g
– CC2 (contrast colour 2 used for fringe) 10g
Make sure all yarn is easy to pull from both ends of the ball (for working with two strands at a time)
Yarns we would recommend for this class are The Croft DK, Brooklyn Tweed Arbour and South Australian Nomad Yarns
Our store will be open 15 minutes before class commences to purchase materials and wind yarn into a cake as required. Instruction booklets will be provided.

With MC, CO 40 sts, join in the rnd. PM for
BOR.
Rnd 1: K to end.
Rnd 2: P to end.
Repeat rnds 1-2 once more.

The class will run from 10am-5pm with a one hour lunch break. You are welcome to bring your own lunch, however we are not able to provide re-heating facilities. There are some great local eateries to try including

About the Designer
Aleks Byrd is a knitwear designer with roots in Estonia, Canada, and the USA. She creates modern patterns with a connection to the past using little-known traditional techniques with a fresh twist on them for unique wearable designs that are fun and rewarding to knit for all levels of knitters. In addition to knitwear design, she works as an illustrator and teaches Estonian knitting techniques around the world. Her latest book Traditions Revisited – Modern Estonian Knits brings together her designs and teaching as introduction to Estonian knitting, both traditional and traditional-inspired.
Refunds and Attendance
You are able to cancel or change dates up to 10 days prior to the workshop or class to receive a full refund. This ensures your spot can be made available for another interested student. Less than 10 days prior to the workshop or class we will be unable to reschedule or refund the cost. You may however transfer your booking to a friend. We ask that in all cases you contact Yarn Trader if you will not be attending.
If for any reason Yarn Trader must cancel a workshop or class for any other reason a full refund will be given or by agreement your booking may be transferred to another class.
