How to use yarn in home decor

The use of yarn in home decor crafts is a simple and highly effective way to add some colour to a room or to change the look of some key items like cushions. You don’t need to be extravagant with your ideas, but you can use yarn to add some small touches that will add to the décor.

Covered lampshades

When you think about how to make beautiful home decor with yarn, don’t necessarily think big. Begin simply, by looking at the smaller features in your home, such as lampshades. You can take knitting yarn and wind it around the lampshade to change the colour and create a specific effect.

Use a contact adhesive to attach the yarn to the lampshade. Make sure the strands touch each other. Choose colours of yarn that match the complementary colour in the room. You can create an effective lampshade by using progressively lighter shades of the same colour, or two colours in even stripes.

Tassels along the edges

Another simple idea of how to make beautiful home decor with yarn is to add tassels to the edge of throws, bedspreads or cushions. Don’t think of adding too many, as they can become overused and even kitsch.

To make a tassel, you will need to use at least ten threads, so that there is some body to each one. Don’t make them too thick, though, so make sure you use a thin yarn. A tassel is created by looping at least ten lengths of the yarn in half, then using some of the same colour to tie them together near the top. You will also need to attach two threads at the top that will be used to sew the tassel onto the bedspread, or other features in the room.

Macrame plant pot hangers

Bringing greenery into your home is an easy way to introduce some colour and a natural touch. The plants don’t only have to be green. If you choose flowering plants, then you will also add colour. Plants can also break up the austere, or geometric, lines of a room.

It’s likely that you will eventually run out of flat surfaces on which to put the plants. Why not hang them, then? You can create wonderful plant hangers using yarn for macrame.

Basic knitting yarn is not suitable, because it is likely to stretch. A thicker yarn resembling a cord is better. However, if you are creative, then you could take strands of a thinner yarn made from something like silk and plait them together to make stronger, thicker cords, which you can then use for macrame.

Nail and yarn pictures

An idea of how to make beautiful home decor with yarn is to create a nail and yarn picture. Use a thin yarn, preferably one that resembles a thin cord. Draw the picture onto a block of wood, then hammer thin nails around the lines of the sketch. Wind the cord around the nails so that the picture is created.

Choose a picture with a simple outline, so that the winding of the yarn is straightforward. As you become familiar with the process, you can make the picture itself more complicated and use the yarn to ‘colour it in’.

Covered letters

A popular feature in some parts of a home are letters, possibly the initial letter of your name, or even your child’s full name as a feature on the door of their bedroom. Covering individual letters is one of the simplest but effective ways you can explore when you consider how to make beautiful Home Décor with yarn.

For a living room or dining room, choose a large letter that has some significance and wind knitting yarn, or yarn that resembles a thin rope, around each leg of the letter. Use a contact adhesive to make sure the yarn sticks to the wood properly. To create the name for your child’s room, use different coloured yarn for each letter.

Conclusion

It is possible to use yarn to add touches to your home décor that will create effective features, or add to the cohesiveness of a room. Different types of yarn should be used for each aspect so that they are all unique and match the look and feel of your home decor.
